According to research conducted by the International Gaming Research Unit at Nottingham Trent University approximately one third of the UK population are superstitious, and a fair proportion of those who play bingo or casino games fall into this superstitious category.
The research began by asking whether participants thought that bingo was a game of skill, luck, or chance. The majority responded that bingo was a game of luck and it was found that 81% of bingo players had at least one superstitious belief, even if they involved traditional worries like opening an umbrella indoors, not walking under ladders and not crossing on the stairs.
Particularly prevalent amongst bingo players was the belief in a lucky seat and that a common tactic to avoid or alter a run of bad luck was to change pens or dabbers. Players also believed that luck comes in runs, whether that be good or bad luck, and most read their horoscopes regularly.
Another aspect of bingo luck was the belief that a lucky friend, mascot or number might exist. Certainly bingo players are noted for often playing with the same people every time, and making deals to split winnings with this individual. This has made the news recently due to squabbles over large prizes that have had to be settled in court, or more heart-warmingly when the women who won over a million pounds split it straight down the middle with her friend without so much as a quibble.
